I first saw Thee Oh Sees live about a year after getting into them — and brother, when I discovered this band, I got into them hard. They almost never play where I'm from, so I made the trek to Austin to see them at Hotel Vegas. Months of anticipation, of annoying my friends with this growing obsession of mine, had at last led me in front of a stage where John Dwyer and his partners in crime were about to do what they do best: melt faces. They kicked off the night's proceedings with a rip-roaring, barn-burning "I Come from the Mountain"; its sheer, overwhelming power would have erased whatever doubts lingered in my mind, if I had had any (I most emphatically did not). And that was just the opener.
